Russell Crowe

This is a perfect example of how a tabloid can take a reality and turn it into a lie for the sake of making Russ look like a vilian.

On the Gladiator DVD commentary with Russ and Ridley, Russell joked about how killing off Maximus cost lots of money because they could be on Gladiator 10 by now. A total joke.. in reality, Russ thought it was better to kill Maximus off and Russ isn't one to do sequels for the sake of cashing in.

The bit about the joke has been making the tabloid rounds, and ContactMusic.com decided to put a very malicious and damaging spin on it:

CROWE BLASTS SCOTT FOR KILLING MAXIMUS

RUSSELL CROWE

Hollywood hardman RUSSELL CROWE has furiously attacked director RIDLEY SCOTT for killing off his GLADIATOR character MAXIMUS - because he's convinced they could have made a fortune from sequels to the epic movie.

The Australian hunk won an Oscar for his role as a Roman general who is betrayed by a jealous prince and returns to Rome as a gladiator to seek revenge.

But he's devastated Scott ended his dreams of turning the story into a lucrative film franchise, with his last-minute decision to kill Crowe's character at the end of the Academy Award-winning movie.

Crowe complains, "It's cost us hundreds of millions. Great idea mate. We could have been on Gladiator 10 by now."

A close friend adds, "Crowe sort of jokes about it but he knows he could have kept going back to they character for years."

Other news outlets never said anything about "furious" or "blasts", because it was a joke.

All element of humor has been replaced with furious anger and now the story is a complete lie and damaging to Crowe's reputation
